Book about Japanese prints out on October 26

Bengaluru: Bina Sarkar Elias, poet and writer, will be in conversation with fellow poet Poornima Laxmeshwar at Bangalore International Centre, Domlur on Thursday.

The event will see the launch of her book — Ukiyo-e Days… Haiku Moments. The book focuses on the evolution of the Japanese art of woodblock printing or ukiyo-e.

The poet has traced the art through block prints from the 17th century (when it was first introduced), to modern times. The haikus, written by Bina, are reactions to each woodblock found on the pages.

“Earlier, artistes would carve designs like beautiful women, geishas and samurai. Then they began taking inspiration from nature and landscapes and other everyday objects,” says Bina, adding that it’s a laborious process that involves many steps.

Today, it’s difficult to find a handcrafted piece, she adds. At the talk, Bina will give a presentation covering the highlights of the book. This will be followed by a discussion with Poornima. Bina has launched her book across the world in cities such as New York and Bangkok.

October 26, 6.30 pm, at Bangalore International Centre, Domlur. Entry free.
